The Problem of Voiced Stops in Modern Greek: A Non-Linear Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, I discuss the function of voiced stops in the phonology of Modern Greek, in light of new theories of marginal contrast. I argue that the complex phonetic realizations of voiced stops can best be explained with reference to multiply-linked phonological structures. I propose to enrich the underlying structures available for the representation of Greek segments, so as to include sequences of [+Nasal] and [-Nasal] linked to the same skeletal position. These new representations imply the existence of eight classes of segments, formed by single and multiple combinations of features and skeletal slots. Six of these combinations are demonstrated to exist in Greek, and the other two are shown to be excluded by universal constraints. On the basis of these configurations, predictions are made about the possible range of dialectal variations in the treatment of voiced stops. All the predicted treatments are shown to exist in the various Greek dialects.

Perceptual evidence of modern Greek voiced stops as phonological categories
The phonological status of voiced stops in Modern Greek (MG) remains unclear. Research shows that listeners typically discriminate native phonological contrasts without difficulty. We report MG listeners show excellent discrimination of MG bilabial [p]-[b] and coronal [t]-[d] stop voicing contrasts, significantly better than their discrimination of nonnative Australian English (AE) [p]-[p] and ...
متن کاملFine-grained Phonetics and Acquisition of Greek Voiced Stops
We explore the acoustics of Greek voiced stops produced by 2and 3year-old Greek-acquiring children and compare them with adult patterns, in order to understand developmental universals in the mastery of phonation-type contrast. A truly voiced stop (i.e., one realized with voicing onset before the burst), is a difficult sound because the buildup of supralaryngeal air pressure during stop closure...
متن کاملVoice onset time is necessary but not always sufficient to describe acquisition of voiced stops: The cases of Greek and Japanese
The age at which children master adult-like voiced stops can generally be predicted by voice onset time (VOT): stops with optional short lag are early, those with obligatory lead are late. However, Japanese voiced stops are late despite having a short lag variant, whereas Greek voiced stops are early despite having consistent voicing lead. This cross-sectional study examines the acoustics of wo...
متن کاملVariation in voiced stop prenasalization in Greek
Ancient Greek clusters of nasal (N) plus voiceless unaspirated (T) or voiced stop (D), merged to ND in Middle Greek, yielding ND or D in different modern dialects. Impressionistic studies suggest that currently there is stylistic variation between D and ND in all dialects, with ND as the high variant. Our study reveals that age, not style, is the most important factor in ND/D variation, with sp...
متن کاملPresentation and Solving Non-Linear Quad-Level Programming Problem Utilizing a Heuristic Approach Based on Taylor Theorem
The multi-level programming problems are attractive for many researchers because of their application in several areas such as economic, traffic, finance, management, transportation, information technology, engineering and so on. It has been proven that even the general bi-level programming problem is an NP-hard problem, so the multi-level problems are practical and complicated problems therefo...
